stream crossingsHdpe Pipe for Stream Crossings

Oxford Plastics manufactures hdpe pipe for lake, river and stream crossings whether it be as a culvert or as a bridge. While bridges are the most permanent and expensive solution available, culverts are the most inexpensive and commonly used form of stream crossings. We offer a broad selection of hdpe pipe sizes for steam crossing solutions ranging from from 3/4" to 18" in size. If you’re looking for rugged dependability, lightweight, long service life, easy installation, flexibility, and tough resiliency, our hdpe pipe is the perfect solution.

Stream Crossings and Water Quality
Land development invariably involves building reliable access routes across rivers, lakes and streams and endangering those water sources. Stream crossings are essential to the management of an area to maintain its water quality and the surrounding environment for future generations. As land is prepared for building houses, logging or farming, and so on, the excavation and movement of the soil will have a detrimental effect on the quality of the water. Implementing a well designed plan for access routes around, under and over these bodies of water is essential to a development's success. Well designed stream crossings not only will protect the water from increasing in temperature thereby reducing the amount of oxygen available to fish and other wild life, it can protect the water from being contaminated by accidental spills, gas and oil, and many other harmful chemicals.

Stream Crossings using Culverts
Using plastic hdpe culverts for stream crossings is probably the most popular method of building an access route across a body of water. Culverts made using hdpe pipe are easily installed, will operate smoothly, are reusable and comparatively inexpensive. Culvert are usually recommended where only temporary crossings are needed and where water loads are not too heavy. They have to be the right size to handle the highest water levels and peak periods of rain fall or risk damaging the stream or river. They also have to be constantly kept clear of sticks, mud and other debris to avoid clogging.

Stream Crossings using Bridges
While bridges are normally recommended where permanent crossings are required, i.e., for large rivers or permanent roads, they can be used for temporary stream crossings. Where stream crossings need to be only temporary, these bridges can be built using bundles of hdpe pipe. Hdpe pipe tied together with cables and placed on geotextile material can be a relatively inexpensive and easy way to construct a temporary bridge. These pipes can be cabled together and layered on top of geotextile fabric set in the streambed. Wooden planks can be placed over the pipes to add stability and traction. While the water flows through the pipes, vehicles can travel over them.

Advantages of Hdpe Pipe
Hdpe pipe are often chosen over other plastic materials because they can handle colder temperatures and don't require any protection from the sun. There are other advantages as well. The tough and durable properties of hdpe pipe make it the best choice for culverts and bridges that are usually under extremely heavy loads. Its superior abrasive resistance over other piping materials also make hdpe pipe more suitable for situations where there is high potential for corrosion and high impact shocks. Its flexibility and durability are also highly valued properties when it comes easy of installation and handling.

Applications
When used for stream crossings, our hdpe pipe has been used in a number of applications including as a solution for culverts in new municipal and residential building projects, as bridges in forestry and agriculture developments, and in the drainage and management of wetlands and swamps. Using hdpe pipe as water distribution systems not only helps to eliminate expensive water loss, but it will reduce water contamination and protect our water supplies from harmful waste pollution.
